Surfing around Taghazout

The coast north of Agadir has several breaks within a short drive of the village. Some are right-hand point waves over rock and reef. Others are sandy beach breaks that suit lessons. The right spot depends on your level, and the level that a school gives a spot is its own judgement, not an official rating.

If you are new to surfing, start at a beginner beach with an instructor. Anchor Point and Killer Point are named for experienced surfers by the national tourism office, so they are not places for first attempts. The spot data below comes from surf schools that publish it, and where two schools disagree, both views are shown.

Anchor Point and the other point breaks

Where the experienced surfers go, and why beginners should not.

Anchor Point

A right-hand point over rock and reef. Panorama lists low tide for it, while another school suggests mid tide, so the tide advice differs. Ask a local before you paddle out. The Surf Expo is announced for Anchor Point from 22 to 25 October 2026.

Killer Point

One guide describes the way in along the cliffs at low tide. As the tide rises, the way back is by paddling only. Plan the return before you go out.

Panoramas

A right-hand point listed for all levels. A local guide warns of currents when the swell is strong, so all levels does not mean any day.

La Source

Rocks line the beach, and the guide asks for particular care when you get out at low tide.

Boilers

Also called The Kettle. A local guide warns of sea urchins at the entry and exit. Wear booties and watch where you step.

Beginner beaches

Devil's Rock, near Tamraght, is a sandy beach break with left and right waves. Panorama lists it for all levels and for beginner lessons. Hash Point, in the village, is also listed for all levels. Banana Point, placed in Aourir, is listed for beginners to intermediates. Read more on the Tamraght page. For a calmer swim away from the point breaks, the city beach of Agadir has its own page at Visit Agadir.

A sandy bottom is gentler than reef, but it does not remove the risks. Currents, crowds and big days still apply. Take a lesson first, listen to the instructor about the day's conditions, and stay out of water that looks too big.

Surf Morocco: when to go and what to wear

Seasons and wetsuits as operators publish them.

Season

Surf Maroc describes October to March as the winter surf phase, with smaller to medium swells in the warm half of the year. It is a description, not a forecast for any single day. The weather page has monthly air temperatures and rain.

Wetsuits, view one

Surf Maroc suggests a 3/2 mm full suit in January, February, November and December. In March and April it suggests 3/2 mm or a 2/2 mm short-sleeve suit. From May to October a shorty or shorts is enough.

Wetsuits, view two

The Pearl suggests 3/2 mm in autumn and 4/3 mm in winter. The two operators disagree on winter, so if you feel the cold, take the thicker suit.

Water quality

The German foreign office notes occasional infection risks from illegal sewage discharge on the Moroccan coast. That is a country-level warning, not a measurement for a given beach. Check with your school and avoid swallowing water.

Lessons and rental: published prices

Offers from one surf camp, listed in 2026. They are examples, not a market range.

The table does not say how long a lesson or a day is, so ask before you book. For full weekly packages, see the surf camps page. If wind and kitesurfing interest you more than waves, Essaouira is the better-known place for it.
