Imsouane at a glance

Imsouane is a small fishing village with a bay that surfers know for a slow, long wave. Boats sit in the harbour, and surfers share the water in the bay. It is a common day trip from Taghazout and a base for a few nights.

This page treats Imsouane as part of the Taghazout area, not as a separate destination. The wave is described here as schools describe it. Advertised claims such as the longest wave in Africa are not an independently checked record, so this guide does not repeat them. Prices are published offers from 2026 and can change.

The wave in Imsouane

What a surf school says about the bay.

Magic Bay

A surf school lists the main wave, Magic Bay, as a sandy spot for several levels at low tide. That does not mean every day is easy: swell, wind and crowds change the picture.

Safety in the water

Check the swell and the tide with a local school before you paddle out. Respect the surfers who are already on the wave, because a crowded bay leads to collisions. Beginners should take a lesson rather than rent a board and go alone. For other levels and spots, see the Taghazout surf guide.

Season

One guide describes the winter surf season as October to March, with smaller to medium swells in the warm half of the year. That is an operator description, not a forecast. The weather page has monthly averages for the area.

Getting from Taghazout to Imsouane

A direct shuttle with online booking.

Imsouane to Taghazout11:25 and 16:301 hour 15 minutesEUR 12

The operator, Souk to Surf, requires online booking for every ticket. Its vehicles stop only where there is a booking, so you cannot count on being picked up without one. It also lists Tamraght as a separate departure point from Taghazout, so make sure you book the right stop. The operator describes day trips to Imsouane as possible, but that does not mean a bus every day or good waves. Check the current timetable before you go.

A day trip with the 10:15 departure gives you a short window, because the return leaves at 11:25 a.m. or 4:30 p.m. Choose the later return for a day at the beach. If you need more flexibility, a private car is an option. See the getting there guide for transfer prices.

The village after the demolitions

What changed, and what to confirm.

What happened

A news report from France 24 documented demolitions of beachfront buildings in Imsouane in January 2024. That report is from 2024 and is background only. It is not evidence that Imsouane is closed to visitors.

What to confirm

Photos, listings and room names from before 2024 do not show what stands today. Confirm any restaurant, room or path with a current source before you plan around it. The harbour and the bay remain the heart of the place.

Parking and buses

Check parking arrangements on the spot. Do not assume a public bus runs to the village: the shuttle above is the published direct option from Taghazout.

Essaouira has its own guides: see Essaouira and surfing around Essaouira.
